I have our latest (mostly) complete song City Jungle stuck in my head something fierce. Can't help but notice that this song has been written, structured and rehearsed entirely on this set of strings. As I loosen the tuning, remove the pegs, wrap them in a bundle and toss them out, the spirit crept up in me. Truly thankful for the people who designed these strings. Thankful for those who mined the bronze ; invented/pioneered that process. Thankful for the owners of music stores, manufacturing plants and marketing firms (the latter decided to make this box a sweet, eye-catching red color). Thank you parents who nurtured my talents and loves ; Teachers who put up with my needing to do EVERYTHING my own way ; friends that never complained when I sat in a full room and payed my only attention to these six strings.

You get the point: I can give thanks to almost everyone, alive and dead, for one of my simplest needs/pleasures. Of course there are shades of grey and subsequently degrees of thanks, but no thanks is too small to take a moment for. Even if thanksgiving has little or nothing to do with stuffy pilgrims and earthy natives anymore, it can still be a day where even the most cynical of us take the time to admit aloud that without each other our lives would be lonely and meaningless. So thank you for everything, really.

Julian

Will you turn that stinking music up!?

Lots of peole ask us what we're listening to right now. It's part of our job to listen to music more frequently and critically than the average fan. We often find diverse and reletively unknown examples of the most excellent music out there. Now we're sharing our favorites with you! Once a month each member of The Breaktone is compiling an album length playlist that you can stream right from your computer! Here's November's Lists:

Julian's Playlist
Geoff's Playlist
Rob's Playlist

Peter and Ryan's lists aren't done yet for this month but I'll make sure to post them when I see them. These new tracks have plenty of it and a consistent one at that. It really confirms that we have improved greatly over a short time. My voice has matured a lot since then and we all have learned from our recording experiences how to make a better product in this vein. A good amount of really good music these days is just a studio recording and to keep up, organic rock/pop bands like ours need to be just as good in a car or a set of headphones as we are in a concert setting. I think these new recordings will show that we are and will turn some attention our way.

What kind of attention? No clue. But i know we'll attract some new fans and possibly our talent will be worth scouting by some small to medium level record labels. It is part of our plans to do this professionally and we need the high level examples of our skill and passion. I think we all feel great that we now have a better representation of ourselves to put forward.

Can't wait to share it with you.

All my love

Julian

SXSW: A Debriefing

We had an unforgettable journey to Austin during South by Southwest. I spent only a day in the city but my mind was being blown so thoroughly the entire time that it felt like a week. There is so much going on that it’s impossible to see everything and impossible to not see something great. If you’re planning on attending in the future, there are two things you should know: cell phone usage is out of the question in downtown Austin, and so is a reasonable parking situation.

Our peripheral (not part of the festival) performance was well-received by old and new fans alike, and it ended up being a perfect seminar in professionalism, improvisation, artistic direction for the band. It’s a great feeling to have people wander in from the street and have a good time listening to your music, and that was the most special feeling of the trip for me.

SXSW is like Disneyland in that it’s fleeting, crowded, hectic, cerebral, and corporate. Every now and then it was like Mecca: you’d meet people who felt as passionately as you did about their art, pushing themselves, hoping to break through. There’s a huge sense of unification within the artistic community at the festival, and it’s uplifting and refreshing in a lot of ways.

Returning to Albuquerque was a profound back-to-reality awakening for me. Here, the musicians mostly dictate the energy of the scene. We have supportive fans, but we don’t have the solid network of venues, recording studios, media outlets, and government funding that many large cities have and that are necessary to house a well-functioning local music industry. So we’re going to have to make one for ourselves. It’s going to take a great deal of time, patience, and energy, and probably a little luck as well. But experiences like SXSW remind you of the latent power of music, that there’s always untapped potential in this beautiful art form.

Have a nice day.

Geoff

Some of the photoset by Trever Hillis that we used as artwork for Lines Divide

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; A most productive and fulfilling combination.
Because each of us has been affected by music in a greater way than most any.
Because music is the seasoning, the soundtrack to our lives.
We, in-turn, return the favor. You know the old saying you get out what you put in.
Our goal is not to change music forever, but to keep it the same in many ways for a new generation of listeners. The music will have changed simply with us having been the players this time around. Unchanged should be the way that music pairs with life like wine with a meal.
The way music conjoins with, reflects and satires life. Music can be perfect to drive, clean or make love to. The same song or album can be deep enough to explore for hundreds of listens and find a new aspect that helps one appreciate it even more each time. Keeping in mind each song is different to each individual!
Let us make music that references our culture. Placing it in a commons where any and all can objectively analyze the ways of people in an unbiased forum.
laugh/cry/spit
Let our characters be the stuff of myths and legends, but their true faces and feats be that of everyman.
Let us tell a story, a murder mystery thriller, about who killed the past, saved the day and birthed the future.
Let this story be told in a manner so simple and catchy a child could remember and repeat it, but so heavy that
it may give pause to any adult that may hear it in such an ironic setting as from a child's lips.
that is to say,
in a way, we're all children acting like grown-ups. Because that's what we've been led to believe come's next.
I don't want to be told. I want to mold the clay every step from earth to cabinet so as to drink and eat from my time and effort.
To make life better. Ours and everyone's.

That's why.

{(love)-Julian[vox]}
